BISS 2010 Conference Announcement and Call for Papers

Spiral, Labyrinth and Solstice: Turning Points in the Sandplay Process of Children and Adults

The Conference will focus on turning points; their phenomenology and an exploration of the factors that may bring about such change in psyche as evidenced in the images of sandplays. The full programme will be announced in May.

Date: July 9-11, 2010 Emmaus Retreat Centre, Dublin Ireland

http://www.emmauscentre.ie

The Emmaus Centre is situated just outside Dublin and a short distance from Newgrange. The latter is a magnificent Neolithic Site that inspires the theme of this conference. Newgrange is a passage tomb that was constructed over 5,000 years ago, making it older than Stonehenge in England and the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt. It is best known for the illumination of its passage and chamber by the winter solstice sun. At the sunrise of the winter solstice, the moment when the season turns from winter towards summer, the rays of the sun reach to the innermost centre of the tomb. http://www.newgrange.com

In Memory of Nessie Bayley

It is always a great sadness when a founding member of a society dies. Nessie Bayley died peacefully at night on March 28th 2009 in America where she also spent much of her time working to improve the lot of disadvantaged children. Her presence will be deeply missed in Ireland by all those who knew her and her valuable contribution to their work.

She was an inspiration to Joel Ryce Menuhin in the early days of establishing BISS and helped to raise the awareness of Sandplay in the social work sector of our NHS system. Her work on Sensory Integration has been an important contribution to the preparation of traumatised children as a pre cursor to engaging in Sandplay. She worked tirelessly to encourage practitioners in the use of Sandplay and to enrichen their own lives through further study. Nessie lived as a much loved person by many.

Nessie's cremation took place on Tuesday 31st March 2009. We are delighted that we celebrated the work of Nessie Bayley at our recent BISS 21st celebrations. Although Nessie was not well enough to attend herself, the talk was perepared with her knowledge and participation.

The Venue
court-01.jpgMagdalene College is part of the ancient University of Cambridge. It is located in the centre of the ancient city of Cambridge beside the bridge on the River Cam, from which the city takes its name. The College has its origins in the year 1428 when King Henry VI approved the establishment of a hostel on the site for Benedictine monks coming from their abbey monasteries in the Fenland to study Canon Law at the University.
The actual conference rooms and some accommodation are in the adjacent Sir Humphrey Cripps wing with modern facilities. Some accommodation is in the old part of the college. Meals are included and a formal 3 course dinner is served by candle light in the 16th century hall.
Cambridge is close to London and has excellent bus and rail links. Travel details will be provided with the programme of events.
